Spanish business crippled by tardy debtors

On paper, José Carlos Ariza’s wine shop in Madrid has been doing good business in spite of Spain’s prolonged economic recession. There is just one problem: many commercial customers are either paying their bills late or not paying them at all.

“It started to get bad two years ago,” says Mr Ariza, whose Vinotek shop in the city centre sells wines to restaurants as well as individual customers. “Some have closed and gone into liquidation. Others just don’t pay. For others, we have payment delays of eight to nine months.”
